Montana's Hunting District 340 is the rugged spine of the Pioneer Mountains in Beaverhead County, a range that splits into glaciated, granitic East Pioneers and softer, timbered West Pioneers, giving elk hunters two very different games on one tag. The unit climbs from roughly 5,500 feet along the Big Hole and Wise River bottoms to above 11,000 feet, it runs roughly 85 to 90 percent public through the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, and it is a snowmelt-driven, free-water unit fed by perennial creeks rather than stock tanks.
