Montana's Unit 314 is brutal vertical country: the northern Absaroka Range climbing east off Paradise Valley, where deep glacier-carved drainages like Mill Creek, Big Creek, and Emigrant rise from a 4,800-foot Yellowstone River floor to wilderness alpine basins above 10,500 feet. Elk hold high in north-facing timber and forb basins through the heat, then slide toward lower wind-scoured benches as snow stacks up, and nearly all access funnels through a few public trailheads ringed by private ranch.
