Unit 301 hunts like a vast tilted plateau rather than a wall of mountains, pinched between the Gravelly Range and the Snowcrest divide with the Ruby River drainage cutting the country in between, and that open, exposed character means elk are won through glass, not boot leather. Elevations run from roughly 5,800 ft in the Ruby valley to above 10,500 ft on the crests, with perennial water in the Ruby and its forks plus reliable high-basin seeps, and recent burn-scar forage flushes that concentrate animals.
