Montana Elk Unit 285

Sightings, hotspots, and hunt insights for Montana Game Management Unit 285.

Unit 285 is classic Seeley-Swan elk country: a north-south glacial trough of lakes and timber pinched between the Mission Mountains on the west and the Swan Range on the east, with the Lolo National Forest owning nearly all the ground. From a 4,000-foot valley floor along the Clearwater River and its lake chain, the flanks climb hard to 8,000 to 9,000 feet, so elk hold in shaded north-facing timber and work huckleberry and larch edges. Our pack covers Unit Overview and Topography, Vegetation and Hydrology, Seasonal Expectations, Logistics and Access, plus a one-page Essential Recon summary. Study the unit on our interactive map, then export the points you choose to onX or your favorite hunting map.

How this data was collected

Data Hunt Guide aggregates publicly available sighting reports from across the web (social media, hunting forums, harvest reports, and trail-camera shares) and uses a proprietary algorithm to identify high-activity zones (hotspots) within each unit. Our team verifies coordinates manually before publication.
