Hunting District 140 is a vertical, closed-canopy block of the Flathead Range, wedged between the South Fork, Middle Fork, and main stem Flathead and squeezed against Hungry Horse Reservoir, with more than 5,000 feet of relief from the 3,100-foot river bottoms to Great Northern Mountain near 8,700 feet. This is deep-timber elk country where the avalanche chutes (serviceberry, huckleberry, and willow) are the real openings, and where late-season snow pushes elk down onto low, south-facing benches.
