Montana Unit 121 breaks every open-plains assumption about elk country: this is far-northwest inland maritime forest pinned against the Idaho line, where the deep Clark Fork River trench splits the Cabinet Mountains from the Scotchman Peaks and Bitterroot spine. Elk work a brutal vertical gradient here, from 2,200-foot reservoir bottoms to 8,000-foot crags below Snowshoe Peak, feeding in avalanche chutes, old burns, and logging cuts thick with huckleberry rather than at scarce water, which is everywhere across this public Kootenai and Lolo timber.
