Montana Unit 170 is a valley-and-wall deer unit: a flat, largely private Flathead Valley floor near 2,900 feet that climbs abruptly into the steep, densely timbered public high country of the Swan Range, topping out on Mount Aeneas at 7,528 feet. That relief drives the deer, pushing them between huckleberry basins up high and farmland forage below, with mid-mountain benches around 4,500 to 6,000 feet turning on as weather cools.
