Montana Deer Unit 121

Unit 121 is not the open-plains Montana most deer hunters picture: it is far-northwest inland-maritime timber pinned against the Idaho line, where the deep Clark Fork River trench and its reservoirs split the Cabinet Mountains from the Scotchman Peaks and Bitterroot spine. Ground climbs from a 2,200-foot valley floor past 8,000-foot crests, so deer key on huckleberry, serviceberry, and forb flushes in avalanche chutes, old burns, and reforesting cuts across mostly public Kootenai and Lolo National Forest timber.
