Montana's District 103 is a dark-timber stronghold tucked into the far northwest corner, where the Purcell Mountains and northern Cabinet Range stack steep, fog-shrouded drainages above the Yaak and Kootenai river bottoms, so deer hunters trade long glassing for close, soft-footed forest work with consistently short sight lines. Elevations run from roughly 1,800 feet along the Kootenai up toward 7,700 at Northwest Peak, and the most productive ground is often recovering cut blocks (10 to 25 years post-harvest) thick with huckleberry, larch regen, and ceanothus.
