Crawford County's Unit 72 is a vast jack pine barrens sitting on flat glacial outwash, where deer hunters work long sight lines through stem-thin pine rather than climbing anything: relief runs from roughly 1,050 feet in the AuSable River bottoms to about 1,400 feet on the morainal rises near Grayling. Cold, spring-fed water is everywhere (the AuSable, Big Creek, cedar seeps), and deer key on aspen cuts, oak draws, and lowland cedar yards by season.
