Idaho's Unit 3 sits in the heart of the Selkirk Mountains, an inland temperate rainforest of moss-draped timber and granite peaks where turkeys work the lower country far more than the punishing high ridges. The unit floors near 2,100 feet along the Priest and Pend Oreille drainages, where river-bottom cottonwood, alder thickets, and huckleberry-rich old burns hold birds, while roughly 70 to 75 percent public land sits checkerboarded with private timber holdings along Highway 57.
