Idaho Unit 61 is a study in contrasts, where the wind-scoured sagebrush steppe of the Snake River Plain climbs into the timbered ridges along the Centennial and Beaverhead front near the Montana divide. Elk hunters work a floor near 5,800 to 6,400 feet up to timbered ceilings around 9,000 feet, and here water dictates everything: north-facing springs and seeps at 7,000 to 8,000 feet often outlast the named creeks that irrigation dewaters by late August, while bitterbrush, mountain mahogany, and aspen pockets anchor the browse.
