Idaho's Unit 3 is the heart of the Selkirk Mountains, an inland temperate rainforest where elk live in glacier-carved granite peaks, moss-draped timber, and brutal 2,000 to 3,000 foot climbs from the valley floors near the Priest and Pend Oreille drainages (around 2,100 feet) to a 7,500 foot crest. Water is never the limiter here, and huckleberry on south-facing burns and avalanche chutes anchors the forage.
