Idaho Elk Unit 10A

Idaho's Unit 10A is North Idaho big woods at its most unforgiving: a maze of steep, timbered canyons draining the North Fork Clearwater, where elk hold in shaded, security timber and feed the brushfield edges. That vertical scale matters, with river bottoms near 1,000 to 1,600 feet climbing to eastern ridges above 6,000 to 7,000 feet, and forage driven by ceanothus and serviceberry regrowing in old burns and logging cuts. Water is everywhere, so animals are not tied to it, and a checkerboard of Nez Perce-Clearwater Forest and private timber shapes every access route off the Highway 11 corridor.
