Unit 8A upends what most out-of-state deer hunters expect from Idaho: this is wet, green, working-timber country, not high desert, where the rolling Palouse farmland on the west climbs fast into dense conifer forest and canyon. Elevations run from about 1,600 feet along the Dworshak Reservoir shoreline up to nearly 5,900 feet on the high buttes of the northeastern divide, and the real planning challenge is the checkerboard of corporate timber, state, National Forest, and private ground.
