Unit 39 is the Boise Front in raw form, where high-desert foothills near 2,600 feet along the Boise River corridor climb in punishing 2,000 to 3,000 foot bursts to roughly 7,900 feet at Shafer Butte, all over loose decomposed-granite ridges that hunt nothing like flatter country. Deer key on the burn-scar mosaics of ceanothus and bitterbrush, the perennial drainages (Grimes, Mores, Robie Creek), and the seasonal slide down to south-facing foothill wintering range.
