Idaho's Unit 28 is defined by the deeply incised canyons of the main Salmon River corridor, where deer hunters face sustained 4,000 to 5,000 ft of relief from a 3,000 ft river bottom up past 9,000 ft ridges in the Salmon River Mountains. Late-season snow pushes deer down onto sunny, south-facing breaks between 3,500 and 5,500 ft, while burn-edge browse like bitterbrush and serviceberry concentrates animals on early-successional slopes.
