Idaho Deer Unit 21A

Unit 21A sets deer hunters on the east bank of the Salmon River, the "River of No Return" country, then climbs from 4,000-foot canyon bottoms to nearly 9,000 feet on the Bitterroot crest along the Idaho-Montana line, nearly all of it Salmon-Challis National Forest. We map how steep, south-facing grass ridges feed into Douglas fir timber, where perennial creeks and seeps hold water, and how late snow pushes deer down onto wind-scoured southern slopes above the river.
