Colorado Unit 86 is defined by contrast: a wide, ranch-dominated Wet Mountain Valley floor near 7,800 to 8,000 feet around Westcliffe, walled on the west by the abrupt Sangre de Cristo escarpment. For turkeys, that lower and mid country is the story, where Gambel oak throws mast in the piñon, juniper, and ponderosa benches and Grape Creek threads perennial cottonwood and willow north toward the Arkansas.
