Unit 83 is high-desert mesa country in far southwestern Colorado, where broad sage-and-juniper benchlands suddenly break into the deep red-sandstone canyons of the Dolores River system, and for turkey hunters that contrast is everything. Elevations run from roughly 5,200 feet along the Dolores canyon to about 8,800 feet on the highest mesas, layering pinyon-juniper, Gambel oak, and ponderosa parklands against scarce water, where birds key on shaded stock tanks, hidden canyon-rim seeps, and bands of bitterbrush and oak mast.
