Colorado Turkey Unit 74

Unit 74 is not the alpine tundra that gives the San Juans their reputation, it is the low country that turkeys actually use: the oak brush benches, ponderosa slopes, and cottonwood river bottoms from the 6,500-foot Animas valley floor up through the 8,000 to 10,000 foot aspen belt, well below Hesperus Mountain's 13,232-foot crown. We track the Gambel oak, serviceberry, and creek-fed drainages that hold birds, and how deep snow shoves everything onto sunny south and west slopes near the canyon mouths.
