Colorado Turkey Unit 56

Unit 56 stacks the southern Sawatch Range straight up from the Arkansas River valley near Salida, and for turkey hunters that means the birds live in the lower bands, not the alpine: the 7,000 to 8,500 foot piñon, juniper, and cottonwood galleries along the river, climbing into the ponderosa, Gambel oak, and aspen transition belt around 8,500 to 9,500 feet. Water is a strength here, with Chalk Creek, Cottonwood Creek, and the South Arkansas running cold and dependable, though private valley parcels near the towns and creek mouths gate access to public ground.
