Colorado Turkey Unit 42

Unit 42 is a river-to-rim ladder for turkey hunters, climbing from the open sage and pinyon benches along the Colorado River near Silt and New Castle, up over the tilted spine of the Grand Hogback, into oakbrush shelves and high spruce-fir parks toward the Grand Mesa rim, more than 6,000 feet of relief in one unit. The birds key on that mid-elevation mountain shrub belt, where Gambel oak mast, serviceberry, and the creek bottoms of Divide, Elk, and Mamm Creeks shape movement, and where interlocked private ground at the creek mouths dictates access.
