Colorado's Unit 22 drops you into the Piceance Basin, a remote high-desert plateau where parallel creek drainages carve up sagebrush parks and pinyon-juniper benches, exactly the mid-elevation edge country where turkeys work between roost timber and open feed. This is BLM-dominated ground climbing from creek bottoms near 5,700 feet toward Roan Plateau rim slopes above 8,500 feet, with Gambel oak, serviceberry, and mountain mahogany driving the forage while private valley bottoms along Piceance and Yellow Creeks pinch water access and push you onto public ridges.
