Colorado Unit 18 is where the high desert of the Wyoming Basin collides with the southern flank of the Elkhead Mountains, and for turkey hunters that transition zone is everything. Birds key on the mid-elevation mountain shrub between roughly 7,500 and 8,800 feet, the Gambel oak, serviceberry, and mahogany engine room, with cottonwood and willow galleries along the Little Snake River corridor near the 6,200 foot floor. Water runs bimodal: reliable in the south, scarce in the dry northern sage.
