GMU 49 is a vertical alpine fortress in Chaffee County, but for pronghorn the story plays out down low, in the arid sagebrush flats, rabbitbrush, and pinon-juniper benches that run from roughly 7,000 feet along the Arkansas River corridor outside Buena Vista and Nathrop. Those valley parks, fed by Chalk Creek and Cottonwood Creek and ringed by mountain mahogany and bitterbrush, sit on a thin private strip that funnels access through a few public corridor roads off US 285.
