Unit 76 is wilderness-grade elk country where the southern San Juan Mountains collapse into the high-desert benches of the Conejos River drainage, with valley floors near 7,800 feet climbing past 13,000 at Conejos and Summit Peaks. Water is rarely the limiting factor here: the Conejos and its tributaries run perennially, so elk patterns follow forage and pressure instead, shifting from alpine tundra parks down to oak-brush slopes as snow builds.
