GMU 74 is a two-personality elk unit, climbing from the 6,500-foot Navajo River bottoms into the southern San Juan high country above 12,000 feet, so reading where elk shift between alpine basins and the oak-brush mesas near Chromo is everything. Water runs more reliably here than in many Colorado units, the Navajo River and Rio Blanco hold flow, and Gambel oak acorn mast pulls animals through the foothill belts, while the hard Southern Ute Reservation line dictates access in the southwest.
