Unit 61 is defined by the eastern face of the Uncompahgre Plateau, where irrigated valley farmland near Olathe (around 5,300 to 5,800 feet) climbs through canyon-cut benches to a rolling, forested mesa-top topping 9,500 to 10,000-plus feet, prime elk country broken by deep finger-canyons. We map where the elk live it: perennial flow in the Roubideau and Monitor drainages, Gambel oak acorns that pull animals onto south and east slopes between 7,500 and 8,500 feet, and the late-season shift to lower wintering ground against the private boundary.
