Colorado Elk Unit 551

Colorado's Unit 551 is a genuine vertical challenge for elk hunters, stacking roughly 5,000 feet of relief from the sage-and-grass floor of the Tomichi Creek valley near 7,700 feet up to the Continental Divide above 13,000 feet along its eastern and southern rim. We map how elk work those bands: the productive montane middle of aspen, oak brush, and open parks, the dense Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir above it, and the reliable water threading Cochetopa and Los Pinos creeks that pulls animals between elevations.
