Colorado Elk Unit 55

Sightings, hotspots, and hunt insights for Colorado Game Management Unit 55.

Colorado GMU 55 stacks vertically through the volcanic West Elk Mountains, climbing from roughly 5,400 feet of orchard and hay valley near Hotchkiss to over 13,000 feet atop West Elk Peak, and elk hunters live and die by the brutal Gambel oak transition band between 6,800 and 8,500 feet that funnels animals off the alpine. We cover perennial water like Anthracite and Minnesota Creek, oak mast and serviceberry forage, the West Elk Wilderness foot-access squeeze, and gumbo road risk. The pack includes Unit Overview and Topography, Vegetation and Hydrology, Seasonal Expectations, Logistics and Access, and a one-page Essential Recon summary. Study the unit on our interactive map, then export the points you choose to onX or your favorite hunting map.

How this data was collected

Data Hunt Guide aggregates publicly available sighting reports from across the web (social media, hunting forums, harvest reports, and trail-camera shares) and uses a proprietary algorithm to identify high-activity zones (hotspots) within each unit. Our team verifies coordinates manually before publication.
