Unit 54 wraps around Taylor Park, a broad glacial basin in central Colorado's high country, ringed by the Sawatch Range to the east and the Elk Mountains to the northwest, where elk hold high in shaded north-facing spruce through the early season before snow pushes them onto mid-mountain benches between 9,500 and 11,000 feet. Water is everywhere here (the Taylor River, the reservoir, and creeks like Texas, Lottis, and Spring), so animals key on cover and willow and aspen forage instead.
