Colorado Elk Unit 461

Unit 461 is Front Range transition country at its most distinctive: a decomposed-granite jumble of domes, boulder fields, and timbered ridges reshaped by the 1996 Buffalo Creek and 2002 Hayman burns, whose regenerating parks now grow the heavy grass, forb, and aspen forage that pulls elk out of the pines. We map the whole gradient, from the 6,400-foot North Fork South Platte canyons up through the 8,000 to 9,500-foot transition benches toward the Kenosha Mountains and Lost Creek Wilderness, plus the perennial river corridors that hold water when the sandy uplands drain fast.
