GMU 461 hands elk hunters one of the steepest vertical transects in the Lower 48: the western wall of the Sangre de Cristo Range climbing from the 7,500-foot San Luis Valley bench to a 14,000-foot granite crest in just four to six horizontal miles. We map how elk segregate by season, holding in high cirque basins and headwater drainages like North and South Crestone during early heat, then sliding onto aspen and mixed-conifer benches around 9,500 to 11,000 feet, and finally onto south and west slopes near private wintering ground.
