Colorado GMU 45 is a vertical gauntlet for elk hunters, anchored on the Colorado River bottoms near 6,000 feet and climbing past 11,500 feet into the basalt rim country of the Flat Tops, a 2,000 to 3,000 foot pull that separates the committed from the curious. We map the dark spruce-fir basins and high seeps that hold elk near water through the early heat, the 8,500 to 9,500 foot benches where they drift as aspens cure, and the south-facing sage and oak wintering ground below 8,000 feet.
