Unit 38 is a steep, granite-cored slice of the central Front Range where the Kenosha and Tarryall Mountains and the Lost Creek Wilderness force elk hunters up off the private inholdings along US-285 and into wild, vertical timber that climbs from 6,400 feet on the North Fork South Platte to above 12,400 feet. This is drainage-driven country, so elk key on perennial water like Tarryall and Goose Creeks, Gambel oak mast, and willow-lined benches rather than stock tanks.
