Unit 32 is a stranded sky-island: a high volcanic plateau on the southern Flat Tops, where flat alpine mesas above 12,000 feet drop off sheer basalt rimrock into timbered drainages falling toward the White River near 6,400 feet. For elk, the story is water and movement, since this is one of the wettest pockets in Colorado, with perennial creeks like the South Fork White and Marvine plus countless glacial lakes, and late-season snow that funnels animals hard onto south and west-facing oak-brush benches.
