GMU 31 in Colorado's far northwest corner is big, lonesome Great Basin country: endless sagebrush flats broken by sandstone rims, dry washes, and isolated juniper mesas where elk live and die by water. From the Little Snake River floor near 5,800 feet up to roughly 8,500 feet on Cold Spring Mountain and the Vermillion Bluffs, this overwhelmingly public BLM unit anchors animals to scarce perennial water and the productive sage-mahogany and bitterbrush benches between them.
