GMU 19 is a rare plains-to-peaks transect for elk hunters, rising nearly 8,000 feet from the shortgrass prairie edge near Fort Collins (around 4,900 feet) to the subalpine basins of the Comanche Peak Wilderness at roughly 12,800 feet. We map how that vertical range shapes the hunt: the Cache la Poudre River and drainages like Buckhorn, Redstone, and Pennock Creek anchoring the montane core, ponderosa parks and Gambel oak browse feeding the edges, and the eastern checkerboard of private ranchland versus the vast Roosevelt National Forest ground to the west.
