Unit 143 hides in Colorado's far southeastern corner, where the basalt-capped Mesa de Maya rises over a thousand feet above shortgrass prairie, and that rimrock-and-canyon country is where elk hunters need to read the ground. Elevations run from about 4,800 feet in the eastern drainages to just under 6,900 on the mesa, with piñon and juniper thickening near the caps, oak brush and mountain mahogany for browse, and water pinned to intermittent Carrizo drainages and private ranch tanks.
