Unit 143 is genuine backcountry, a high volcanic landscape in the southern San Juans where the Conejos River climbs from 8,000 feet near Mogote to a wilderness crest topping 13,000 feet on Conejos Peak. With the South San Juan Wilderness closing the interior to motors, elk hold high in spruce-fir basins and aspen edges, sliding down to the oak-brush benches as October snow shuts the passes. This is a natural-water unit, so animals roam the high parks rather than tethering to tanks.
