Colorado GMU 8 throws deer hunters a brutal vertical gauntlet, climbing from 5,400 ft foothill creek bottoms west of Fort Collins to ridgelines above 12,900 ft in the Mummy Range and Comanche Peak Wilderness. We map the layered country deer actually use: the mountain mahogany and bitterbrush browse low, the aspen and timber-edge benches between 8,500 and 10,500 ft where animals shift in October, and the south-facing winter slopes around Buckhorn and Cherokee Park.
