Unit 66 deer hunters are really hunting a volcanic high country, layered tuff and breccia cliff bands beneath the La Garita crest where the floor near 7,800 feet along Saguache Creek climbs past 13,000 feet on the alpine rim. Deer work the wet meadow parks and dark Engelmann spruce benches, leaning on perennial water from Cochetopa and Stewart Creeks, then slide to sun-warmed sage slopes in the 8,000 to 9,500 foot band when snow loads the peaks.
