Unit 61 deer hunting is defined by a dramatic east-facing escarpment where the Uncompahgre Plateau rises straight out of private valley farmland near Olathe and Montrose, climbing from roughly 5,300 feet to a rolling, canyon-cut tableland topping 10,000 feet. We map the country deer actually use: pinyon-juniper and head-high Gambel oak that drops acorns in mast years, perennial flow tucked into the Roubideau and Monitor drainages, and the lower south-facing winter bands along the eastern face.
