Colorado's Unit 52 is a study in vertical relief: sage-and-pinyon river benches near 6,400 feet along the Colorado River climb abruptly through head-high Gambel oak into spruce-fir basins and the alpine ridges around Castle Peak above 11,200 feet. For deer hunters, the story is water and oak: lower drainages run dry while seeps and stock tanks dictate movement, and late snow shoves animals down onto the 6,500 to 8,500 foot south-facing benches.
