Colorado GMU 45 is a study in extremes, a volcanic Flat Tops plateau ringed with basalt rim country that drops from alpine benches above 11,500 feet through dark spruce-fir timber and oak-sage benches to the Colorado River bottoms near 6,000 feet, and deer hunters who learn that gradient learn this unit. We map the bio-zones (mountain mahogany, bitterbrush, and aspen suckers in the mid-band), the perennial seeps and cirque lakes that hold water in dry years, and how snow pushes deer down to south-facing wintering benches between 6,500 and 8,000 feet.
