Unit 28 is a high-desert-meets-mountain transition in northwest Colorado's Rio Blanco County, where pinyon-juniper mesas and Gambel oak benches are dissected by steep sandstone drainages climbing from roughly 6,000 feet along the White River toward 9,500-foot forested ridges near the Flat Tops. Mule deer hunters need to read water here, perennial side-canyon springs, BLM stock tanks, and hidden seeps under the rims, alongside the mahogany and bitterbrush browse.
