California's D7 is a true west-slope Sierra Nevada unit where deer country climbs from 1,500-foot oak-and-chamise foothills through mixed conifer to an 11,000-foot granite crest, all of it cut by the deeply incised Stanislaus, Tuolumne, Merced, and San Joaquin canyons. This is a water-rich unit, so deer are not pinned to a few tanks but spread across bitterbrush, deerbrush, and black-oak acorn ranges that shift with each cold front.
