California's D5 is a study in contrast: a high granite plateau perched at 7,500 to 8,500 feet across the Kern Plateau, ringed by steep dry canyons and tumbling into oak-chaparral foothills that bottom out near 3,200 feet along the lower Kern. Deer hunters live and die by water here, where the South Fork Kern and hidden granite-bowl springs anchor animals once the eastern flank runs dry, while bitterbrush, mountain mahogany, and fall acorn drop drive the feeding.
