D16 deer country is a study in contrast: gentle Kern Plateau pine flats and meadow systems sit at 7,500 to 9,500 feet, then drop off the eastern escarpment in abrupt 2,000 to 3,000 foot granite walls toward the Owens Valley. Deer key on water here, the South Fork Kern, Ninemile Creek, and meadow springs like Monache and Templeton, plus bitterbrush and mountain mahogany on the benches. When Sherman Pass Road closes with snow, animals drift toward the lower Kern and south-facing pinyon belts.
