California Deer Unit C4

C4 is the rare California deer unit that straddles a geological seam, where the volcanic basalt rimrock and ashy tablelands of the southern Cascades hand off to the glaciated granite and deep river canyons of the northern Sierra. Deer hunters work a hard elevation gradient, from 1,500 foot oak and foothill-pine benches up through the mixed-conifer core (roughly 3,500 to 6,000 feet) to 8,500 foot fir country, chasing acorn mast, bitterbrush, and spring-fed creeks while navigating the checkerboard of posted private timber laced through the Plumas and Lassen forests.
