Deer key on the oak belt: black oak and canyon live oak between roughly 3,500 and 5,500 feet, where acorn drop drives movement and animals slide to mid-mountain benches as forage cures. Water defines everything here, with the Middle Fork Eel and Stony Creek headwaters reliable but buried at the bottom of brutal canyons.
